Latest developments in the drive to achieve net-zero CO2 emissions targets in the global rubber & tire industry:
Apollo Tyre’s chief R&D advisor P K Mohamed has been awarded the ‘sustainability professional of the year’ at global sustainability leadership awards 2023. The event is organised by non-profit organisation World Sustainability. According to his citation, Mohamed has been credited with ‘charting a course towards sustainability” at Apollo. He is currently overseeing the development of sustainable raw materials at the Indian-based tire maker.
In China, Zhongce Rubber Recycling Technology is collaborating with the Beijing University of Chemical Technology and Nanjing Green Gold Giant Rubber & Plastic Advanced Technology to develop waste-rubber recycling & application technology. The ‘award-winning project’, said ZC Rubber, has made significant advances in eco-friendly tire-recycling technology, having produced “solid and liquid reclaimed rubber” with environmental benefits. To date, ZC Rubber said it has recycled 400 kilotonnes of waste tires (equivalent to 1.7 million units of tires), resulting in a reduction of 510 kilotonnes of carbon emissions – comparable to planting 27.87 million trees.
Bekaert has delivered a first batch of tire reinforcement made with recycled steel content under a pilot project with Bridgestone. The Belgian group added 14 Dec that it had achieved a ‘sustainability milestone’ by obtaining third-party certificates for its tire reinforcement with high recycled steel content. Bekaert’s tire reinforcement has “a minimum recycled content of 50% for tire cord and 70% for bead wire.” Read more
Tire maker Prinx Chengshan (Shandong) Tire has gained a national-level ‘green factory’ title from China's ministry of industry and information technology. In a 24 Nov statement, Prinx said it had focused on ‘green' supply-chain management and industrial-product 'green' design over the recent years, having set "several national standards" for intelligent manufacturing of green tires in China. The cvompany said it also has ranked first in China “for many consecutive years” in terms of energy-consumption per tire produced.
Orion SA has gained the ISCC Plus certification for its carbon black plant in Cologne, Germany - its fourth facility to receive the accreditation. Orion received equivalent certificates for its facilities in Borger, Texas; Belpre, Ohio; and Jaslo, Poland in 2022 – with all three sites recertified this year. The three units produce sustainable rubber black; while the Cologne plant offers speciality products for applications such as batteries, coatings, printing and polymers, Painter said.
