First tires are expected to be delivered to Lilium’s facilities this month
Paris – Michelin Group is to design and produce tires for German aerospace company Lilium NV, which makes all-electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) jets.
The two companies began working together more than a year ago and have now signed a final agreement covering design, serial production, and support, Michelin announced 9 Nov.
As part of the project, the French group aims to deliver first tires that “meet the safety weight, and reliability requirements” for the Lilium eVTOL jet during this month.
According to Michelin, “proper weight and high performance are essential for eVTOLs”, enabling the jet to maximise weight-efficiency.
According to Michelin, its tires offer “best-in-class weight efficiency”, in line with Lilium’s payload requirements.
The tires, it added, are specially designed to facilitate safe vertical take-off and landing operations, while adhering to the stringent weight limits.
The collaboration also supports Michelin’s strategy of 'enhancing sustainability within the aviation industry', added Sophie Brechoire, president of Michelin Group aeronautic activities.
