Tire makers confirm plans to expand use of RFID technology to enable analysis of tire data
London – Yokohama Rubber Co. (YRC) and Nexen Tire have recently joined the Global Data Service Organisation for Tyres and Automotive Components (GDSO).
The Brussels-based organisation works to standardise data related to tires and enhance access to and exchange of this data.
In becoming GDSO members, the two manufacturers have committed to complying with industry standards for 'promoting individual tire identification management'.
“Yokohama Rubber will participate in GDSO activities to promote the construction of a platform for utilising various data related to tires,” said YRC in a statement 2 Feb.
In addition, the Japanese group said it would will comply with tire industry standards by providing access to “accurate, reliable, and up-to-date data on our tire data management platform”.
In a separate statement 19 Feb, Korean tire maker Nexen confirmed its commitment to providing accurate and reliable data to the platform.
“We as a tire manufacturer want to make a positive contribution to the further development of the tire industry and play an active role in shaping it," it added.
Both tire makers confirmed plans to expand their use of RFID technology to enable the analysis of tire data and provision of value-added services.
GDSO's remit includes establishing global agreements on standardising tire-related data, developing on-line access solutions.
The organisation has already developed a platform to allow data-sharing via a serialised tire-identity, captured by different technologies such as RFID.
Furthermore, work is ongoing to create a new service to collect critical information along the life-cycle of tires.
GDSO lists its 'executive & full members' as also including: Bridgestone, Continental, Giti, Goodyear, Pirelli, Prometeon and Sumitomo Rubber Industries.
