Sludge-to-hydrogen project to produce carbon black by-products for use in the tire industry
Brussels – E.On Hrvatska has gained EU funding for a project to transform sewage sludge into hydrogen for blending into the local gas grid in Croatia.
The ‘sludge-to-hydrogen’ (S2H2) project will also produce sustainable fuel for hydrogen-powered buses operated by Zagreb’s public transport firm ZET.
E.ON’s process will produce carbon black and ash as by-products, which will be used as additives in tire manufacturing and concrete production.
As announced by the European Commission in Decemeber, S2H2 is one of 17 new clean-tech projects to receive a combined funding of €65 million.
The funding, it said, is intended to "bring breakthrough technologies to the market in energy-intensive industries, renewable energy, and energy storage."
