Tool “statistically analyses” data to asses environmental and social issues
Hyogo, Japan - Sumitomo Rubber Industry has launched a ‘risk assessment’ tool to trace the sustainability of natural rubber (NR) materials procured for its operations.
The tool “statistically analyses” questionnaire data to assess the environmental and social issues related to the acquired NR, said SRI in a statement 12 Oct.
The results are then displayed on a map provided as part of the tool.
The app looks into various elements, including deforestation, water resource management as well as forced or child labour at the plantation area.
It covers 10 NR producing countries, including many procurement areas from which SRI sources its rubber.
The Japanese rubber & tire group said the use of the tool will enable it to procure NR from areas compliant with the Global Platform for Sustainable Natural Rubber (GPSNR) policy.
SRI purchases rubber through its Sumitomo Rubber Singapore Pte. NR procurement arm, which launched the assessment initiative in July to accelerate the sustainability of NR.
