Inroad project, supported by major tire makers, targets 200k hectares of rubber plantations in region
New Delhi – India is advancing a major natural rubber (NR) plantation project in the northeast of the country and West Bengal area, according to the Automotive Tyre Manufacturers’ Association (ATMA).
The Inroad (Indian natural rubber operations for assisted development) project was launched in 2020, financially supported by four major local tire makers – Apollo Tyres, CEAT, JK Tyre, and MRF.
The initiative has achieved over 125,000 hectares of rubber plantations, 90% of its target of establishing 200,000 hectares of NR plantations over a five-year period, ATMA said 26 Dec 2024.
Launched with a budget INR11 billion (€124 million), the project covers states of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, and West Bengal.
In addition to bolstering India’s NR supply, the project supports over 140,000 local farmers across 94 districts in the northeast of the country.
According to ATMA, the northeast region currently contributes to 23% of total NR production in India and is poised to significantly expand its share once the Inroad project is completed.
