Among target applications, materials can be used to enhance wear-resistance in tires
The Woodlands, Texas – Huntsman Corp. has started construction work on a 30-tonne carbon nanotube plant, under plans industrialise its manufacturing technology for nanomaterials.
Originally announced by Huntsman in 2021, the plant to convert methane gas to carbon nanotubes and 'clean-burning' hydrogen will be one of the largest of its kind in the Americas
The process, according to Huntsman, yields carbon nanotube-based materials, which can be produced as sheet, tape, yarn, or additives and dispersions.
The material is “thinner than a human hair and up to 25 times stronger than steel” and can be used in various industries such as aerospace, automotive and construction.
Huntsman also envisages applications in the rubber industry: noting that carbon nanotubes can contribute to the wear resistance of the tires.
Huntsman's 26 Sept statement did not give a location for the project but said the plant is expected to be completed by the end of 2023.
