Production facility in Houston can now produce 500ktpa of butadiene
Houston, Texas – TPC Group has completed an upgrade project at its Houston operations to increase crude C4 processing capacity at the site.
The project included a multi-year debottlenecking initiative focused on "risk mitigation and improving infrastructure" to strengthen service to the ethylene and butadiene industries.
Following the upgrades, the plant's maximum sustained daily rate (MSDR) increased by 20% for butadiene production, bringing the total nameplate capacity to 1.1 billion pounds/year (500ktpa), said TPC 16 Dec 2024.
The new capacity combined with an increase in hydrotreating processing capacity and third-party crude C4 long-term tolling arrangement, raises TPC’s overall crude C4 processing capacity by 25% compared to last year’s peak production.
The investment, said TPC president and CEO Ed Dineen, renewed the group’s commitment to the “growing butadiene market.”
“We will continue to grow our capacity to better meet the needs of the industry,” the TPC boss added.
TPC currently only produces butadiene at its Houston site.
The group ceased butadiene production indefinitely at its Port Neches, Texas plant following explosions and a fire in November 2019. (ERJ report)
