Based on EcoContact 6 series, concept tire offers ‘optimised behaviour’ during stop-and-go traffic in urban driving
Hanover, Germany - Continental has unveiled a new tire concept, the Conti CityPlus, which is claimed to increase the total energy efficiency of a tire by up to 10%.
Launched during the IAA Mobility Show in Munich, the tire is based on EcoContact 6 series, and has an ‘optimised behaviour’ during stop-and-go traffic in urban driving.
Continental said this increases the range of passenger cars by up to 3%, corresponding to savings of 0.6 kWh per 100 kilometres for electric vehicles.
The concept tire includes a range of modifications designed to reduce tire deformation during braking and acceleration.
Features include a specially designed tread pattern, newly constructed carcass, and modified rubber compound, Continental reported.
The tread strip features a special stiffened V-shape pattern structure, while a new construction method results in a firmer carcass for reduced tire deformation.
A special system of fillers and an optimised polymer network in the rubber compound also contribute to the tire’s high overall energy efficiency, added Continental.
