Composed of four core technologies, platform lowers noise, while enhancing tire durability, efficiency
Seoul – Hankook Tire has unveiled its latest tire technology system developed exclusively for electric vehicle tires.
The ‘iON innovative technology’ can lower cabin noise by 18% while adding 15% to tire life compared to tires for internal combustion engine vehicles, said Hankook 30 Aug.
In addition, internal tests carried out by Hankook showed that the new technology can increase driving stability by up to 10% and fuel efficiency by 6% compared to ICE vehicle tires.
The technology platform comprises four key tire technologies particularly addressing noise, wear, grip and weight of tires.
The four core technologies will subsequently be divided into 15 detailed technology components, "providing a more organised and streamlined R&D process", Hankook added.
Hankook holds 58 commercialised patents related to the technology platform which have been integrated into iON.
Nine of the patents relate to noise reduction, including ‘noise guard’, a thick, vertical tire groove on the surface that utilises 'knurling' technology.
The mileage enhancement technology sector is covered by 11 patents, including the ProDurable compound, designed to extend tire life by combining advanced materials.
Furthermore, Hankook explained, the ‘Round Even’ technology renders a more uniformed road contact pressure, helping to extend tire life.
A total of 23 patented technologies have been implemented to enhance tire-grip and handling, with technologies like Grip Claw, a material utilising ultra-thin-film 3D 'kerf' technology.
Hankook’s ProGrip compound also combines high silica concentrations with “eco-friendly materials” for improved grip performance.
Another 15 patented technologies have also been implemented, including ProCoupling compound, designed to enhance rolling resistance.
The compound improves rolling resistance by increasing silica dispersion through "optimal compound combinations".
The Korean tire maker said it intended to proactively promote the technology platform in its communications with customers.
Initially introduced to the European market in May last year, iON was launched in Korea and North America in September and December last year.
Hankook launched the tire in China in May and is aiming to ‘rapidly grow’ its position in the EV tire market with the tire brand.
