Nine production plants currently powered by renewable energies
Altdorf, Switzerland – Swiss engineered polymer group Datwyler is aiming to become ‘climate neutral’ at its production sites by 2023, starting with nine facilities that are already powered 100% by renewable energies.
The group mostly generates the power from water, wind and photovoltaics, provided by local electricity suppliers or through own solar panel installations, said Datwyler in an announcement 22 May.
At the end of 2022, the share of electricity from renewable sources across all Datwyler plants was 36.6%, said the Altdorf-based supplier.
The group’s CO2 emissions during the year were 4.7% lower than 2021, as a result of investments in renewable energies over the course of the past two years.
In 2021, Datwyler installed over 8,000 sqm of photovoltaic panels on the roofs of its Indian plant in Kesurdi, which alone reduced the group’s CO2 emissions by more than 1,500 tonnes per year.
Last year, it equipped five more production sites with photovoltaic systems: one plant in Switzerland, three in Italy and one in Germany.
Datwyler now has a total of more than 19,000 sqm of photovoltaic panels, equivalent to around 2.5 soccer fields.
The Swiss supplier is also evaluating the installation solar panels on the façade of its Schattdorf manufacturing site in Switzerland, with an output of around 350 MWh per year.
Furthermore, the Xinhui and QSR sites, which were acquired in 2022, will also be integrated into Datwyler's sustainability strategy with targets to increase their share of renewable energy over the ‘next few years’.
By 2030, Datwyler aims to be climate neutral at all of its 27 production sites worldwide in Scopes 1 and 2.
Scope 1 emissions are direct greenhouse (GHG) emissions that occur from sources that are controlled or owned by an organisation.
Scope 2 emissions are indirect GHG emissions associated with the purchase of electricity, steam, heat, or cooling.
