Compound includes bio-based synthetic rubbers and oils as well as rCB and recycled polyester and steel wire
New Delhi – JK Tyre & Industries has developed a tire comprising 80% 'green' materials, making it India's "first" tire maker to achieve this level of sustainability.
According to the company, its UX Green tire delivers performance comparable to that of a standard radial tire while registering a much lower carbon footprint.
Developed followed a “decade-long” research, the tire uses a range of recycled, renewable and bio-based materials, JK Tyre announced 25 April.
Materials include natural rubber, “bio-attributed” styrene-butadiene rubber and butadiene rubber, bio-based oil and recycled rubber powder.
The tire compound also includes recovered carbon black as well as recycled polyester and steel wire, the company pointed out.
The majority of these materials, continued JK Tyre, are certified under the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC) programme.
The UX Green tire has been “tested extensively” in indoor facilities and outdoor on roads as well as on test tracks to validate its performance.
Development of the tire is part of the Indian group's long-term objective to achieve 'carbon neutrality' by 2050.
