Nexen unveils 52% sustainable-material tire
Among other materials, demo tire features recycled PET bottles, rice husk-based silica
Seoul – Nexen Tire has unveiled a sustainable demonstration tire, with more than half of materials used derived from renewable or recycled sources.
In a 24 April statement, the Korean tire maker said it used “current and emerging” technologies in developing the 52% sustainable tire.
The tire features 44% renewable materials, including natural rubber, bio-based synthetic rubber and silica derived from rice husk waste.
Another 8% of the materials comes from reprocessed waste, such as tire cord made with recycled PET bottles and bead wire from scrap iron.
Launching the tire, Nexen said it aims to become "one of the most forward-thinking tire companies in terms of ESG.”
