Move part of efforts to achieve carbon neutrality and circular economy in motorsports
Hiratsuka, Japan – Yokohama Rubber Co. Ltd (YRC) has shifted to renewable energy to power its motorsports tire production line in Mishima, Japan.
The tires produced on the line are intended to contribute to carbon neutrality in motorsports events held in Japan and around the world in 2023, YRC said 7 April.
The renewable energy is being provided by Tepco Energy Partner, which has produced certificates for the renewable and non-fossil attributes of the power.
Operational since 1946, the Mishima plant produces passenger car and light vehicle tires and is also YRC’s only site for the manufacture of racing tires.
Overall, the Japanese facility has the capacity to produce nearly 14 million units of tires per year.
The motorsports tires, noted YRC, are used in “top category races” around the world, including Japan’s Super Formula Championship and the Super GT races.
The tires are also used in the Nürburgring 24-hour race in Germany, and the Pikes Peak international hill climb in the US.
The shift to renewable energy at the Mishima plant is YRC’s latest initiative targeted at achieving net zero CO2 emissions by 2050.
