Denver, Colorado – Clothing and leisure-wear giant VF Corp. is set to roll out new products using “regeneratively-sourced natural rubber” produced in Thailand.
Developed in partnership with Terra Genesis Int., the regenerative agriculture process encompasses “a variety of environmentally and socially conscious practices”, VF said 13 April.
Following a three-year pilot supported by VF, Terra Genesis developed a “first of its kind regenerative outcome verified rubber supply system."
Regenerative rubber farming incorporates multiple tree species to mimic a natural forest ecosystem, and uses indigenous farming techniques.
The approach is said to help diversify crop yields and provide multiple streams of income to the farming community.
These practices, VF said 13 April, support biodiversity, enhance water cycles, improve soil health and sequester carbon.
While changing growing practices, the rubber growing processes also help to “replenish and strengthen” the soil, plants and surrounding nature.
VF began using regenerative rubber in its products with the launch of the Greenstride Motion 6 Hiker boot by Timberland in early February.
Meanwhile, Vans is utilising regeneratively grown natural rubber in its Circle Vee silhouette range of 'eco-friendly' footwear.
In autumn, another leading VF brand North Face will launch its first footwear products containing regeneratively-sourced natural rubber.
In February, VF became the first company outside of the automotive industry sector to join the Global Platform for Sustainable Natural Rubber (ERJ report).
