Pyrum to recycle waste tires from Mercedes-Benz

Dillingen, Germany - Pyrum Innovations AG has extended a cooperation with Mercedes-Benz with a new agreement to recycle end-of-life tires (ELTs).

The waste tire pyrolysis company will recycle “several hundred tonnes” of ELTs supplied by Mercedes-Benz every year, said a 3 April Pyrum statement.

The used tires will be delivered from a Mercedes-Benz used parts recycling centre and processed at Pyrum's main plant in Dillingen.

The agreement is the ‘next step’ in Pyrum’s partnership with the premium car maker, which is already using pyrolysis oil in some of its components.

Pyrum partner BASF already uses pyrolysis oil as feedstock to produce virgin plastics for the manufacture of Mercedes-Benz vehicle components.

Last year, the first Mercedes-Benz series-production models such as the EQE and S-Class were equipped with ELT-based door handles.

According to Pyrum, Mercedes-Benz S-Class is also set to be equipped with a crash absorber made from the recycled plastics material.

“Through the chemical recycling of ELTs from Mercedes-Benz vehicles, we can jointly reduce the use of fossil resources,” said Pyrum CEO Pascal Klein.
