Sihanouk, Cambodia – China's Jiangsu General Tire Technology has started trial production at its tire plant in the southwestern Cambodian province of Sihanouk, local authorities have announced.
The Yuan1.9 billion (€257 million) facility in the Sihanoukville special economic zone is expected to start commercial production in April, said a 15 March statement from the Sihanouk governor's office.
General Tire launched the Cambodia tire plant construction project in 2020 with plans to manufacture 6 million pieces of passenger car tires per year at full capacity.
Last year, the Chinese tire maker changed the scope of the project to 5 million pieces of passenger car tire and 900,000 units of all-steel truck & bus tires.
In the first phase, the plant will have capacity to produce 3 million passenger car tires and 500,000 TBR tires, according to the governor’s office announcement.
Tires manufactured at the facility, it said, will be mainly exported to the US, Europe and Brazil.
