Malaysian government wants rubber hub at Kedah
ERJ staff report (BC)
Jitra, Malaysia - The Malaysian federal government plans to transform Kedah state into a rubber hub by developing both upstream and downstream and upstream activities, said deputy international trade and industry minister Datuk Mukhriz Tun Mahathir, according to a Borneo Post report.
“The proposal entails cultivating a 16,000 hectare rubber plantation from the Malaysian/Thai border to Baling,†Mahathir told reporters.
“I can foresee a high value-added rubber industry in the offing in Kedah. Currently, we are merely exporting natural rubber, but we can get higher revenue by exporting rubber-based products,†he said.
