Pirelli recalling Maserati OE tires

Washington Pirelli Tire LLC is recalling 1,190 Pirelli P Zero all season ultra-high-performance tires, size 275/40R19 101W, because an incorrect tire-building specification may cause cracks in the sidewalls toward the end of the tires’ treadlife, leading to air loss.

The tires in question were manufactured exclusively as original equipment for certain Maserati cars, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said in a safety recall report.

They were manufactured between 29 Feb and 29 Oct, at Pirelli’s plant in Settimo Veicoli/Turin, Italy. They bear the tire identification number XBY2U3520916 through 4316, NHTSA said.

Pirelli discovered the defect on 27 Oct, while performing routine control plan testing on the tires manufactured that week, according to NHTSA.

Although the tires met all applicable federal safety standards, Pirelli decided 8 Nov to recall them, strictly out of caution, the agency said.

The same day, Pirelli and NHTSA notified Maserati SpA of the recall, according to NHTSA. Pirelli is not aware of any accidents, returns or other issues related to the defect, the agency said.

Dealer notifications were sent out beginning 22 Nov, and owner notifications beginning 20 Nov, NHTSA said. Pirelli has corrected the tire building specification that caused the defect, the agency said.
