Partners say products can match the durability and performance of virgin materials
Kirkland and Niles, US – Prism Worldwide and Sherwood Industries have formed a partnership to introduce end-of-life tire materials into extruded thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) sheets.
Sherwood Industries, which produces the sheets for automotive and domestic uses, conducted a series of trials with Prism’s Ancora polymer.
The thermoplastic elastomer contains a high percentage of recycled high-performance tire materials, according to the partners.
After refining the manufacturing formula and enhancing product performance, test runs produced sheets matching virgin materials for durability and performance, they stated.
Sherwood Industries president Bob Russin said Prism’s method of compounding tires into TPE material had “significantly enhanced” the ability to produce sustainable materials.
For Prism Worldwide, CEO Bob Abramowitz said: “The vast array of applications for Sherwood’s extruded rubber sheet material allows us to work together to introduce a reliably high-quality TPE to a broad range of industries.
“Our process of engineering sustainable polymers using end-of-life rubber tires provides a high-tech answer for a material that was formerly relegated to low-tech applications.”
Sherwood Industries produced more than 7.5 million square feet of extruded rubber sheets over four production lines in 2024.
It has purchaed a new extruder earmarked for sustainable rubber sheets containing Prism TPEs. All Sherwood’s extruded rubber and urethane foam products are ISO 9001:2015 certified.
Prism is now seeking to invest in technology, equipment and expansion after recently announcing a $40 million Series A funding round.
