MEMA issues statement on proposed 25% tariffs on goods from Mexico and Canada
Washington, DC – In the US, the Vehicle Suppliers Association (MEMA) has “echoed the profound concerns” expressed by sectors across the US economy regarding the Trump administration’s imposition of tariffs on goods from Mexico and Canada.
“We reinforce our opposition to a 25% tariff on goods from Mexico and Canada which will place additional pressure on the supplier industry and impede the ability of supplier companies to grow, invest, and operate their businesses,” stated MEMA.
Such tariffs, it said, would severely impact the US vehicle supplier industry: jeopardising jobs, increasing costs for consumers; and undermining the competitiveness of the integrated North American supply-chain, which supports over 930,000 jobs.
“Tariffs of this magnitude would drive up costs for manufacturers, reduce investment in US production, and force job losses across the industry,” continued the association.
MEMA concluded with a ‘call to action’ urging the administration “to lift these tariffs and to prioritise policies that support American manufacturing, economic stability, and competitiveness.”
