‘Mislabled’ P7 Cinturato tires produced at Pirelli’s manufacturing site in Romania
Rome, New York – Pirelli Tire LLC is recalling over 2,000 P7 Cinturato tires for incorrect maximum inflation pressure marking.
The tires, used both as OE and replacement, were produced at Pirelli’s manufacturing plant in Slatina, Romania, said a report by National Highway Safety Traffic Administration (NHSTA) 29 Jan.
The subject tires were marked as having a maximum permissible inflation pressure of 340 kPa, although they were designed to have a maximum inflation pressure of 350 kPa, explained the NHSTA report.
As a consequence of this unintended reduction of the labelled maximum inflation pressure, the tires fall subject to a different strength test prescription, which NHSTA said they were “not meant to satisfy.”
The mislabelling, it said, could make the tires subject to a different set of testing standard which are not applicable to them, potentially failing to identify problems.
If the tire structure is compromised and a sudden loss of air occurs, there may be an increased risk of a vehicle crash, NHSTA added.
The tires have been used as OE on certain Mercedes-Benz E-Class passenger cars imported into the US by Daimler.
