Establishes new business unit to target key markets including automotive and tire industry
Essen, Germany – Evonik has officially merged its silica and silanes business line to create a new business entity called ‘Smart effects.’
As previously reported by ERJ, the merger is part of Evonik’s major restructuring plan unveiled in December last year. (ERJ report)
The new unit employs 3,500 people worldwide and will be organised under Evonik’s recently created "Advanced Technologies" segment.
In a 22 Jan statement, Evonik said the merger leverages the expertise of both business lines to deliver “innovative solutions that benefit both customers and the planet.”
This strategic step aims to strengthen the financing power of our complementary silanes, precipitated and fumed silica technology platforms,” stated Lauren Kjeldsen, president of Evonik's Smart Materials division.
By combining expertise in molecular silane chemistry and silica particle design, Kjeldsen said Evonik can deliver “differentiated solutions that add value to our customers with a tailored portfolio approach."
'Smart effects' will target key markets including the automotive and tire industry, electronics, consumer health and nutrition, and building protection.
In the tire industry, the combination of silica and silanes has proven successful, especially in producing green tires that enhance fuel efficiency and safety, noted Evonik.
This integrated approach, it added, will further support “advancements in joint silica and silane applications, technical processes, and asset networks.”
