Michelin, Brembo tap intelligent solutions to lower tire braking distance

Clermont-Ferrand, France – Michelin Group and Italian braking systems supplier Brembo have joined hands to enhance vehicle safety by leveraging the ‘full potential of their intelligent solutions.'
The partnership combines Brembo’s expertise in advanced braking systems, vehicle modelling and AI with Michelin’s tire modelling and algorithm development capabilities.
The combination has enabled a continuous exchange of real-time data on tire performance between Michelin software and Brembo's Sensify braking system, the French group reported 10 Dec.
Michelin said its portfolio of software can supply data on tire-wear, -loading and -grip, and enable engineers to fine-tune the braking system and its characteristics.
Brembo’s Sensify, meanwhile, equips braking components with a "digital brain" that leverages AI, algorithms and sensors to independently control each wheel.
The combination, said Michelin, is “one of the most advanced braking systems, designed to deliver an exceptional driving experience and enhanced safety.”
According to Michelin, initial tests completed virtually and in the field have been “very promising.”
In the first development phase, Michelin's tire models and algorithms were integrated with Brembo's intelligent braking models and vehicle simulations in a fully virtual environment.
In the second phase, physical tests were conducted on tracks at Michelin's research centre, where the tire maker said its simulation results were confirmed.
The tests demonstrated braking distance reductions of up to four metres during ABS 'events', using the same tires in various conditions.
Four metres, Michelin stressed, is close to the average length of a car.
“The braking system also showed quicker response time, minimised traction loss, improved lateral stability, and the absence of wheel locking,” the French tire maker added.
Simulation and software development are now "essential tools in the real-time monitoring of tires,” commented Serge Lafon, president of the business line automotive OE Michelin.
