Tiruvallur, India – Michelin has broken ground on a new expansion project at its tire production facility in Tiruvallur, near Chennai, in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
The project will involve an investment of INR5.6 billion (€62 million) to upgrade the existing plant and add production capacity for passenger car tires, TRB Rajaa, Tamil Nadu’s minister of industry said via social media.
The upgraded facility will “be amongst Michelin’s best in the world,” employing Industry 5.0 principles and advanced sustainability practices, said the 21 Sept post from the regional government official.
The tire maker, added Rajaa, will incorporate artificial intelligence, robotics and automation to streamline production and enhance efficiency at the site.
The social media post did not provide further details about the production capacity of the plant, which currently stands at 28,000 tonnes per annum.
Operational since 2012, the unit currently produces truck & bus and earthmover tires.
