Hankook rolls out ISCC+ tires for new Porsche EV
South Korean tire maker starts series production of tires with 45% sustainable content in Hungary
Neu-Isenburg, Germany – Hankook Tire has started series production of ISCC+ certified electric vehicle (EV) summer tires at its manufacturing plant in Racalmas, Hungary.
Developed with Hankook iON Race Tires, the iON evo features 45% sustainable material content*, and is being supplied as OE for the updated Porsche Taycan electric sports car.
According to Hankook's 28 May announcement, the iON evo is the first tire in the premium vehicle manufacturer's OE range with ISCC+ certification.
The certification represents “the culmination of our ambition to produce tires that are truly more sustainable,” said Klaus Krause, VP and head of Europe technical centre at Hankook.
The production facility in Hungary is the second Hankook site worldwide to receive the ISCC+ certification, said Krause, without providing further details on the other site.
The ISCC+ certification system audits both material-input and -output of the production process to ensure compliance with standards to reduce use of virgin fossil-based materials.
Tapping its motorsports knowledge, Krause said Hankook has increased sustainability and optimised rolling-resistance of the new to enhance the range of the Porsche EV.
*Among other materials, the tires include: bio-based silica from grain waste; recycled PET textile cord from plastic waste; synthetic rubber from bio-circular feedstocks; recycled carbon black from used tires; and natural resin.
