Defect in sidewall ‘may cause a rapid loss of air and vehicle control’
Washington – Yokohama Tire is recalling 7,000 of its all-position 504C commercial tires in size 11R22.5 in the US due to potential defect in the sidewalls.
In a 23 Aug statement, the National Highway Traffic Safety Agency (NHTSA) said a defective belt cushion splice may allow air to leak into sidewalls of the tire.
The potential ‘air bubble’, it went on to say, “may cause a rapid loss of air pressure and loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.”
According to NHTSA, eight warranty tires were returned from the field for analysis with the defect areas “in a consistent location”.
This, it added, indicated that the defect was related to an operator method, not a machine.
Manufactured at Yokohama’s production facility in West Point, Mississippi, the tires were produced between 26 June 2022 and 3 Dec 2022.
