Chemical companies working on ‘biocircular styrene’ based on tall oil
Cologne, Germany – Lanxess AG and French energy group TotalEnergies have entered into a cooperation on the supply of biocircular styrene, Lanxess announced 4 Jan.
Under the partnership, TotalEnergies will produce styrene using tall oil as feedstock. Tall oil, derived from tree resin, is a by-product of pulp production.
The partners will use a mass balance approach for the sustainability credentials of the styrene – a monomer for plastics and rubber materials – as certified in accordance by the ISCC Plus standard.
“Our customers are increasingly asking for sustainable solutions, and raw materials with a low carbon footprint,” said Lanxess head of procurement and logistics Marcel Beermann.
“By partnering with TotalEnergies, we can further expand the respective offering for our customers,” Beermann added.
