Project to increase capacity at Silao plant by more than 1 million pieces a year
Guanajuato, Mexico – Pirelli & C. SpA has announced yet another investment project at its production facility in Silao, Mexico, aimed at increasing the manufacturing capacity for ‘high-value’ tires at the plant.
The €114-million investment, to mark the facility’s 10th anniversary, will be carried out in two years and will increase production at the site by 1 million units to a total of 8.5 million pieces, said Pirelli 29 Oct.
The project will see production area at the site expanding by 16,000 square metres to over 220,000 square metres.
It will also create 400 new jobs to bring the total number of employees at the site to 3,200 people.
“The Silao plant has made an important contribution to the success of Pirelli's global strategy of becoming the leader in the high value segment,” said Marco Tronchetti Provera, executive vice chairman and CEO of Pirelli.
“In fact, the Silao plant is one of the most technologically advanced in the group and will soon host a new Pirelli R&D centre,” he added.
Pirelli has described Mexico as “a strategic area” for all its activities in North and Central America.
“With this investment we will further increase Pirelli's technological and industrial competitiveness,” said Claudio Zanardo, president and CEO of Pirelli North America.
This is Pirelli’s third round of investment in Silao over the past two years.
In May, the tire maker announced plans to build a €14-million new technology and digitalisation centre at the site over a two-year period.
In 2021, Pirelli invested €30 million at the factory to raise production capacity from 6.6 million units per year to 7.2 million.
Inaugurated in 2012, the Silao plant manufactures high performance and ultra high performance tires, currently dedicated to the local market and North America.
The plant, according to Pirelli, has delivered some of the most innovative solutions in the tire group, including the manufacturer’s “cyber tire”, PNCS (Pirelli noise cancelling system), and RFID writing.
