Project aims to fit RFID tags in tires prior to vulcanisation process
Istanbul, Turkey – Turkish reinforcement and materials specialist Kordsa has entered a partnership with German-based SES RFID Solutions to advance radio frequency identification (RFID) technology in tires.
As part of the collaboration, the two companies will develop a small-sized, flexible RFID tag to be placed on vehicle tires prior to the curing (vulcanisation) process, said Kordsa in a statement 5 July.
The project will employ SES’s patented Wiretx RFID tag, which does not require an energy source such as a battery and features a flexible antenna on the outside of the label.
Kordsa will contribute its materials technology to apply the tags onto the tires before the curing process.
Prototype sampling is scheduled for the third quarter of 2022.
“We believe that RFID technology is an important step in the transition to connected smart tires that will add value to all stakeholders, especially the end user, in the tire value chain,” said Burak ?lgün, Kordsa market development project manager and RFID project manager.
RFID technology is predominantly used by tire makers for traceability of tires from production to end-of-life.
The data provided by RFID technology can provide further operational efficiency for manufacturers, OEMs, distributors and fleet management within the automotive industry.
