Prysmian signs €700m cable supply deal in Germany

Milan, Italy – Energy and telecom cable systems manufacturer Prysmian Group has extended a major supply contract with German grid operator TenneT TSO GmbH for power transmission across Germany.

In a statement 24 June, Prysmian said TenneT had awarded a €700-million contract for the development of 546 kms of 525kV HVDC underground cable systems to be used in the second part of SuedOstLink power transfer project.

Prysmian has been supplying to major German high-voltage, direct current (HVDC) projects, including SuedOstLink, SuedLink and A-Nord, and has already secured contracts worth over €1.5 billion.

As part of the latest agreement, the Italian manufacturer will supply and install a land system to transport renewable energy from wind farms in northern and eastern Germany to high-consumption cities and factory areas in Germany’s south.

SuedOstLink consists of two projects - V5 and V5a. Both projects, each with 2GW, will supply the south of Germany/Bavaria with 4 GW power.

Prysmian said the first 20kms of the 550kms of cables for the 270km route of SuedOstLink (V5) were completed and delivered at the beginning of 2022.

Delivery of the cables for V5a is scheduled from 2025 onwards, as project V5a is set to go into operation in 2030. This V5a extension runs parallel to the SuedOstLink corridor V5.

Prysmian's HVDC P-Laser cable used for the project has been developed by the group and will be produced in Gron, France, where investment in a new second production line is underway.

Network components will be produced in Livorno, Italy, while the fibre optical cable will be made in Slatina, Romania.

The P-Laser cable solution offers a power transmission capacity of over 2GW on a single system.

The product is claimed to be the first 100% recyclable, environmentally friendly, high-performance insulation technology based on high performance thermoplastic elastomer (HPTE), which cuts CO2 emissions in production by 30%.
