Investing €60m to add capacity for automotive noise, vibration and harshness materials to meet local demand
Shanghai, China – BASF is building a second production facility to produce microcellular polyurethanes in Shanghai China, to meeting the country’s “booming electric vehicle market”.
The German group has broken ground on the €60 million plant, which features advanced mould lines and will increase production capacity by 70%, said BASF 15 April.
The unit, to be built at BASF’s existing PU facility in Shanghai, is set for operation in 2027.
Produced under the brand Cellasto, the materials are used for applications in automotive noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) components.
Targeting the growing automotive market in China, the project will help BASF ‘stay close to the local market and customers,’ said Dr Jeffrey Lou, president and chairman Greater China, BASF.
This is the second major investment by BASF in Cellasto production in recent weeks.
In February, the group broke ground on its second Indian production facility for microcellular polyurethane in Dahej, with operation scheduled for 2026.
The “significant investment”, it said, was in preparation to support the growth plans of various OEMs and showed confidence in the Indian market. (ERJ report)
