Historic low in European Union new car registration for first month of year
Brussels – EU passenger car registrations continued to fall during the month of January, as the ongoing semiconductor shortage negatively impacted the market.
New car sales were down 6.0% year-on-year at 682,596 units – marking "a new historic low" in EU car sales for the first month of the year, said the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) 17 Feb.
Various markets in central Europe posted gains last month, with Slovakia (72.6%) and Romania (55.5%) seeing the strongest growth.
Sales in Poland, however, contracted by 10.2% year-on-year in January.
In western Europe, on the other hand, almost all countries posted negative results.
Across the four major car markets, double-digit losses were seen in Italy which saw a 19.7% decline, followed by France which posted a drop of 18.6% compared to last January.
Germany posted a solid growth of 8.5% and Spain saw a modest gain of 1.0 over January 2020.
