Kresge wins Charles Goodyear Medal; Noordemeer, Busfield also recognised

Akron, Ohio-Edward Kresge, known for his work in the development of EPDM rubber with ExxonMobil Chemical Co. and his involvement with Advanced Elastomer Systems L.P., has won the 2010 Charles Goodyear Medal, presented by the ACS Rubber Division.

Four others also were selected for division awards: Jacques Noordermeer of the Technical University of Twente in the Netherlands, the George S. Whitby Award for Distinguished Teaching and Research; Wim J. van Ooij of the University of Cincinnati, the Melvin Mooney Distinguished Technology Award; James Busfield of Queen Mary University of London, the Sparks-Thomas Award, given to younger scientists; and Rudi Faust of the University of Massachusetts Lowell, the Chemistry of Thermoplastic Elastomers Award.

The Rubber Division disclosed the winners in a publication distributed at the group's Oct. 13-15 meeting in Pittsburgh. The division also gives out the Fernley H. Banbury Award for innovations of production equipment, instrumentation, control systems or improved technologies used in the industry, but no candidate was selected.

Kresge's research and technical leadership led to innovations such as EP viscosity index modifiers, polyolefin TPES and tailored MWD EPDM elastomers, among other accomplishments. He also initiated the AES joint venture of ExxonMobil and Monsanto.

The men will receive their honors at the division's spring meeting in 2010 in Akron.
