Norma wins “major order” from UK car maker

Maintal, Germany – German-based Norma Group has been awarded a “major order” to supply thermal management systems for passenger cars to an unnamed UK car manufacturer.

The order includes the development and production of cooling water and thermal management tube systems for a total of 1.8 million vehicles, Norma announced 28 May.

The group said it was currently working with the client to develop the systems, which will be produced at Norma’s manufacturing plant in Pilica, Poland from 2020.

The cooling water tube systems are designed for vehicles with conventional combustion engine drive systems and include weight-reducing materials and plastic connectors for quick assembly.

Multi-layer thermoplastic tubes and plastic connectors will also be used in the thermal management systems for electric vehicles, Norma added.

In a statement to ERJ, Norma confirmed that the tube systems will be from its Normaflex product range, but declined to give further details on the types of materials which will be used.

According to Norma, "a large part of" the company's tubes portfolio is made of thermoplastic elastomers.

To ensure “ideal operating temperature” of electric engines, Norma said it is using a “flow-optimised” line for the coolant and sensors to monitor heat distribution within the thermal management systems.

“This [combination] saves energy, reduces the load on the battery and increases the range of the electric vehicles,” Norma’s statement added.
