Sensor-powered technology enables “optimal use” of individual properties and performance of tires
Abstatt, Stuttgart – Pirelli and Bosch have signed a joint development agreement to advance the development of intelligent tire technology, Pirelli has announced.
The collaboration aims to create new software-based solutions and driving functions using sensors integrated into tires, according to the 10 Sept statement.
The long-term partnership, said Pirelli, will also "explore advanced tire signal computing logic as input for improved vehicle dynamic control systems."
Pirelli's Cyber Tyre is being used as a reference product for the project, particularly as the tire integrates sensors that collect data and transmit it to the vehicle to be processed in real-time.
Bosch previously developed an embedded software programme (ESP) application specifically for Pirelli tires in an earlier joint project with the hypercar manufacturer Pagani Automobili.
According to Pirelli, the ‘cyber tires’ fitted on the Pagani Utopia Roadster were shown to effectively transmit key items of information to the ESP control unit.
Such technology enables "the optimal use of the individual properties and performance of the tires, providing enhanced safety and driving conditions,” said Pirelli.
Within the partnership, Bosch will contribute expertise in system-level hardware and software, micro-electro-mechanical sensors and tire pressure sensors.
Pirelli's input wlll feature in-tire technologies, including hardware and software, algorithms and tire modelling, towards enabling real-time collection, processing and transmission of data.
The data will be provided to vehicle's electronic control system, using Bluetooth technology with very low power-consumption, added the Italian group's statement.
