Reichshof, Germany - Schwalbe has now collected and recycled one million bicycle tires, with the reclaimed material going back into new products, the German company announced 13 Aug.
According to the German tire manufacturer, the achievement marks a milestone for its ‘closed-circle’ approach in which the recyclate is used to manufacture new tires.
Schwalbe’s tire recycling programme was developed together with Pyrum Innovations AG and the Technical University of Cologne in Germany.
The scheme has attracted the participation of more than 1,800 specialist retailers across the country, which accept old bike tires from consumers.
Schwalbe said it already uses recycled carbon black (rCB) from its recycling system in 70% of its product range - saving 80% CO? equivalent versus using conventional carbon black.
The rCB comes directly from Pyrum Innovations AG, the company where the actual recycling process takes place in Saarland, the tire maker noted.
“End consumers do not directly notice the use of rCB, as neither the design and performance nor the price of the tires change as a result,” concluded Schwalbe.
