Davao City, The Philippines – The rubber industry in The Philippines plays a significant role in the nation's economy, contributing to both agricultural and industrial sectors.
In the period 2018-2023, the Filipino’s natural rubber production has recorded a compound annual growth rate of 10.2%.
This growth is mainly due to a significant increase in rubber planted areas especially in the Zamboanga Peninsula and in the Davao Region.
Most rubber plantations are small- to medium-sized farms typically ranging from 1 to 50 hectares.
Today, the downstream sector of the industry in the Philippines is a dynamic and integral part of the overall rubber value-chain. It includes manufacturers of tires, automotive parts, sports products and footwear.
Yokohama Tire Philippines Inc. is considered the largest user of natural rubber in the country – its plant being the Japanese group’s second largest production facility worldwide.
Strengthening this sector is essential for the Philippines to fully capitalise on its rubber production capabilities and enhance its economic development.
This can be achieved by expanding R&D and production to include more specialised and high-value rubber items, investing in sustainable practices and adopting advanced manufacturing technologies.
*The event, titled ‘Rubber: new Frontiers, New Markets, is being organised by the Philippines Rubber Industry Association and Xida Communications. More details.
