Water-jet waste tire processing introduced during a Siemens industry event in Chennai
Chennai, India – UK tire recycling start-up 'ReTyre' has introduced its technology in India, as part of a Siemens 'future tire industry' event held earlier this month.
The introduction in the country, said the recycler, is in response to the Indian government’s "strict" extended producer responsibility requirements, which came into effect in 2022.
Backed by 15 years of research at the Imperial College London, ReTyre was founded in 2022 and has had "significant collaboration" with Siemens and other partners.
ReTyre's patented "dynamic pulverisation technology (FDPT)" uses ultra-high-pressure water jets to break down waste tires into their constituent materials.
The process leaves a recyclable steel and "a partially devulcanised rubber", which ReTyre calls activR, said a company statement 20 May.
The Activ-R materials, claimed to be “a premium, sustainable rubber powder”, can then reintroduced into the supply chain, reducing the demand for virgin materials.
ReTyre is initially recommending the technology for all tire factory rejects, “as they can optimise the final produce according to their desired composition,” said Shravan Bansal, a ReTyre co-founder.
The London-based company has set itself an ambitious goal to deploy 5,000 machines worldwide in the next five year.
The company said it planned to start the mass production of its machinery in India without giving further details.
