Kraiburg TPE advances elastomer compounds for automotive sealing
Formulated for exterior use, compounds can be used in TPE-EPDM hybrids for glass run channels and sealing profiles...
Waldkraiburg, Germany – Kraiburg TPE is launching new EPDM-adhesion elastomers for automotive sealing and exterior uses, particularly for markets in Europe and the Americas.
The thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) compounds are claimed to display “a remarkable leap in materials technology" in terms of adhesion, durability and processability.
Thermolast K TC7RQP-BLCK and TC8RQP-BLCK grades are intended for applications requiring enhanced UV resistance, high-quality surfaces, low friction, and adhesion to EPDM.
Specifically formulated for automotive exterior parts, the compounds are suitable for use in glass run channels and sealing profiles featuring moulded corner joints and end caps.
The materials were developed in cooperation with “one of the most important tier 1s in automotive sealing businesses worldwide,” said Kraiburg TPE's 2 May release.
The partners, it added, have conducted tests of the compounds in “comprehensive trials” since 2023.
The compounds, according to Kraiburg TPE, feature “constant EPDM adhesion quality proven at 23°C and 90°C heat aging, with dry surface appearance.”
The flow properties of the TPEs have also been “optimised” to provide a broad processing window and increased design flexibility in part and tool design.
“Additionally, the compounds offer weathering resistance, colour stability, low surface friction behaviour and wear and tear resistance,” said Kraiburg TPE.
Kraiburg TPE stated that TPE-EPDM hybrid technology “meets market trends by supporting the transition [from full EDPM] for sealing systems due to process efficiency.”
Furthermore, the TPE hybrid provides “lower product carbon footprint as well as weight reduction” compared to EPDM, continued the German compounder.
The compounds are available worldwide with Kraiburg TPE holding “various patents” for the new series in Europe and North America, the company pointed out.
