Shanghai, China – Bluestar Elkem Silicones, part of the Sinochem Group, has officially launched its upgraded flagship R&D centre in the Asia-Pacific region.
Initially established as the Bluestar Group’s Asia-Pacific R&D centre in 2009, the Shanghai unit now features upgraded research systems and equipment, it announced in April.
The enhanced facility, said Bluestar, responds to growing demand for advanced silicone products in sectors such as new-energy vehicles, medical, personal care, textiles and 3D printing.
Benefiting from China's "favourable business environment," Bluestar Elkem Silicones said it "has experienced rapid growth in China and has continued to increase its focus on the Chinese market.”
The upgraded silicones R&D centre “will strongly support the growth of the entire Asia-Pacific market,” the company's statement added.
The centre features four application areas focused on: new-energy vehicles; life sciences; coatings; and 3D printing.
The new-energy vehicles centre will develop silicones that enhance the performance, safety and light-weighting of electrical and electronic components used in electric vehicles.
The life sciences centre will develops silicone products for medical devices, biopharma, and personal care – aligning with sustainability trends.
Bluestar Elkem Silicones will develop release agents, pressure-sensitive adhesives, and automotive safety airbag coating materials within the coatings application centre.
A 3D printing unit will expand the potential development of silicone products for additive manufacturing.
In conclusion, the group stated that it will continue to increase investments in China in the future, using the R&D centre as a “a source of innovation.”
