Lunar Dawn team to develop off-road vehicle for “living and working” on the moon surface
Denver, Colorado – Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. is part of a team selected to create an off-road vehicle for “living and working” on the moon surface.
NASA awarded the lunar terrain vehicle services (LTVS) contract to the Lunar Dawn team, led by Lunar Outpost as prime contractor along with its principal partner Lockheed Martin.
Other team members include General Motors, Goodyear, and MDA Space, according to 3 April announcement by Lunar Outpost.
Goodyear has been assigned to develop the rover's tires leveraging “years of experience in lunar mobility, dating back to Apollo missions”.
The lunar rover will be part of NASA’s Artemis moon campaign and is expected to “dramatically extend” the range that astronauts can travel from their landing sites.
"Surface mobility is a critical capability for humanity's future in space,” said Lunar Outpost CEO, Justin Cyrus.
The vehicle will enable “a sustainable presence in space where humans can live, work far from Earth," said Kirk Shireman, VP lunar exploration campaigns at Lockheed Martin.
The vehicle will have the ability to operate during the two-week-long lunar nights with temperatures down to -280 degrees Fahrenheit.
