22 industry bodies demand “urgent clarification and workable solutions” for implementation of EU deforestation regulation
Brussels - The European Tyre and Rubber Manufacturers’ Association (ETRMA) is among a group of industry associations calling for “urgent clarifications” regarding the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR).
The 22 European associations, representing a range of commodity-based sectors, called on the the EU Commission and member states to provide “workable solutions” for EUDR implementation.
In a 28 March statement, the grouping expressed concern regarding the ‘slow pace’ of preparation of EUDR-related legislative acts, related mandatory systems and lack of guidance on implementation.
Suppliers, operators, and traders need to make “significant adjustments” ahead of the EUDR implementation, the multi-sector coalition pointed out.
However, it added, their efforts "are impeded by large gaps in information, lack of appropriate technical solutions and by misconceptions as to the functioning of our complex chains.”
While the Commission is providing “some clarity” in its FAQs and upcoming guidance document; “many questions are still pending, and the pace with which they are addressed is too slow, and the clarifications insufficient.”
Without clarifications, it said, there could be “potential unintended adverse effects on the supply of essential goods for the European market, such as food, feed, chemicals, packaging, hygiene products, tires and other automotive components.”
