Transport strikes force Nokian to lay off workers at car tire plant
Decision follows negotiations with 350 production employees at Finnish car tire production facility
Nokia, Finland – Nokian Tyres is adapting production at its passenger car tire factory in Finland, in response to ongoing 'political strikes' affecting ports and transportation in the country.
The strikes have led to Nokian’s inventories of tires filling up, as the company is unable to deliver tires to its customers, explained its press statement issued 22 March.
Based on current information, it said, the production changes will last for at least two weeks, and follow negotiations with 350 production employees at the Nokia car tire plant.
Following these talks, “production employees can be laid off due to financial and production related reasons for a maximum period of 90 days,” Nokian stated.
Employees will be laid-off from 26 March to 9 April, the tire maker continued, while emphasising that production of heavy tires will continue in Nokia as normal.
