Kumho, Orion to collaborate on sustainable tire development
Korean tire maker rolls out concept tire with 80% sustainable raw materials
Seoul – Kumho Tire and Orion Korea have joined forces to develop sustainable ties using raw renewable and recycled raw materials.
The two sides have signed an MoU to carry out a tire R&D project using carbon black derived from renewable feedstocks such as vegetable oil and pyrolysis oils from end-of-life tires (ELTs).
The move is part of Kumho’s sustainably programme which aims to increase the use of ‘eco-friendly carbon black’ in its tires, the Korean tire maker announced 15 Jan.
Kumho said its tires currently include 25% sustainable raw materials aims to achieve a level of 100% by 2045, with a 40% mid-way target by 2030.
In 2022, Kumho developed tires using 55% sustainable raw materials and, just before the end of 2023, rolled out a concept tire using 80% environmentally friendly feedstock.
Among other raw materials, the latest concept tire featured ELT carbon black, recycled PET from waste bottles, and recycled steel cord, noted Kumho.
