US tire manufacturer says in ‘advanced discussions with third-party’ over potential sale
London – Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. Europe Ltd (CTE), part of Goodyear, is engaged in “advanced discussions” with a third-party company to potentially sell some of its assets in the UK.
The negotiations concern “some of the assets used in the manufacturing and sale of certain motorsport tires under the names Avon Motorsport and Avon Racing,” Goodyear confirmed to ERJ.
In a statement 24 Jan, the US tire maker said it is looking to conclude the discussions “soon” and would be able to provide further details once discussions have closed.
Established in Melksham, UK in 1904, Avon Tyre was acquired by Cooper Tire in 1997.
The business was subsequently taken over by Goodyear following its 2021 purchase of Cooper Tire.
As previously reported by ERJ, Goodyear announced the planned closure of the Melksham factory in 2022 as it moved production to its facility in Serbia.
The factory was set to cease production by the end of 2023. (ERJ report)
