"Computer vision" technology to provide insights on root causes of near-miss accidents
Clermont-Ferrand, France – Michelin has reinforced its mobility intelligence operations with the acquisition of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania-based startup RoadBotics.
Founded in 2016, RoadBotics is specialised in road infrastructure image analysis and uses artificial intelligence to process visual data collected on roads by cameras of mainly smartphones, said Michelin 11 July.
The company has developed “computer vision” technology which uses AI to recognise images, understand them and process the information obtained from them.
The know-how enables the transformation of the images into “actionable insights” which help road managers identify priority maintenance areas.
The acquisition will complement Michelin’s driving data to intelligence (DDi) services, which are also focused on analysing data and driving behaviour.
Combined with DDi, Michelin expects the computer vision technology to provide insights on the root causes of near-miss accidents based on driving behaviour.
The data will make decision making easier and faster and more relevant for road safety authorities.
The service will initially be available in North America before being rolled out in Europe.
“This new acquisition is in line with Michelin’s growth strategy around tires,” said Lorraine Frega, Michelin’s EVP distribution, services & solutions, strategy, innovation & partnerships.
“With the acquisition of RoadBotics, Michelin strengthens its expertise in artificial intelligence supporting a smarter and safer mobility,” she added.
