Brussels – Truck and bus tires are legally required to have tire pressure monitoring systems under the EU's new 'vehicle general safety' regulation which came into force 6 July.
The legislation also introduces mandatory advanced driver-assistance systems to improve road safety and establishes a legal framework for the approval of automated and fully driverless vehicles.
Buses and trucks must be equipped with technologies for better recognising possible blind spots, warnings to prevent collisions with pedestrians or cyclists as well as tire pressure monitoring systems.
Also under the regulation, cars and vans are also required to have additional safety features, such as lane-keeping systems and automated braking.
All vehicles will be required to have intelligent speed assistance, reversing detection with camera or sensors, attention-warning in case of driver drowsiness or distraction, event-data recorders and emergency-stop signals.
The rules will cover all new vehicles from 7 July 2024, with some measures to be extended to cover different kinds of road vehicle up to 2029.
