Gloves association mees US customs and border protection officials
Petaling Jaya, Malaysia – The Malaysian Rubber Gloves Manufacturers Association (MARGMA) has renewed its commitment to social compliance during a recent visit by the US customs and border protection agency officials to the country.
“The Malaysian rubber glove industry would like to work with the US CBP like partners, and it is truly committed to total compliance,” said MARGMA president Dr Supramaniam Shanmugam addressing the US visitors.
According to the industry official, the Malaysian gloves industry has been implementing a ‘zero debt’ policy with regards to its employees and initiated remedial actions “to dislodged itself from the stigma of forced labour.”
“The industry is definitely moving in the right direction and that would certainly be a model industry to emulate in the governance of an equitable workforce,” he added.
The two sides, said Shanmugam, held “a very informative and yet extremely fair” exchange of views and agreed to have more regular engagements to develop an understanding of both parties' role in the governance of labour issues.
