Milford, Michigan)--General Motors Corp. issued a news release reiterating that it won't join Ford Motor Co. and DaimlerChrysler A.G. in recommending customers change their tyres after six years, regardless of treadwear or other factors.
"The fact is that most tires wear out before they age out," James Gutting, director of GM's Tire and Wheel Laboratory in Milford, said in the release.
The auto maker said it requires its tire suppliers to meet more than 20 critical performance specifications, including passage of an accelerated tire aging test. While motorists should be mindful of high temperatures, high speed and heavy loads when considering tire replacement, GM doesn't recommend automatic replacement after a certain number of years if those factors are no more than normal, the company said.
